bob bear, i'll bring you in, cnn contributor, former cia officer. welcome back. before we talk about the specifics of sarin, let me just throw this at you. is it possible at all that this man, this mad man, bashar al assad, is bluffing? >> oh, i don't think he's bluffing. we have to consider what he represents and that's a very small community, which feels under threat. it thinks it will be destroyed by sunni fundamentalists if it loses damascus or any other big cities. they have their backs to the wall. they say among themselves that when it comes to their lives or killing the rebels they will kill the rebels. in other words, yes, they will use the sarin, i've been dealing with the people for 30 years, they're almost a cult. what seems to us completely irrational decision, they're capable of. i don't know whether they have reached this point or not, but if things get bad enough in syria, i have no dowd they'll use it. >> on this sarin gas, i was reading about it, apparently there are two key components that make this gas and they're held separately, kept separat

or with bob dole? >> no. absolutely we're with him. we did some of the early background on it. our guy steve groves was writing papers on this weeks and weeks ago. we're also surprised frankly the senate would bring it up in a lame duck session. this is something that needs full and considered -- >> they're going to bring it up again next year. you won't be there. >> they can bring it up and we'll take the same position. >> should there be a compromise in order to avoid going over the fiscal cliff? john boehner's already $800 billion in increased tax revenue, not necessarily raising the marginal tax rate on the wealthy, but capping deductions, limiting loopholes, are you with the speaker of the house on that? >> unfortunately, wolf, the policies of president obama have already taken us over the cliff. if you meet with businesses like i do all the time, they've already paired back plans for next year anticipating what's going to happen. we can fix this christmas eve if we want, but we've already hurt the economy and job growth. >> are you with boehner? >> i'm not with boehner. t

this started almost 14 full days before newtown when bob costas went on the air and talked about that gun issue. >> and got hammered for it. >> so i just think that now that this has happened and, like you, steven, two grandchildren. 6 and 9. my daughter-in-law is a first grade schoolteacher. this really hit home and i think it hit everybody home. >> but the media have to be careful here to have balance. for example, on msnbc the anchor thomas roberts who is not in favor of changing gun control laws and roberts came back and said, well, so, you think we should just send our children to school to be assassinated and that suggests that anybody who has a different view is somehow the enemy. >> that is very unfair. but one of the reasons why this debate took off is that you have unusual voices stepping forward, especially joe manchin of california who gets an "a" rating from the nra and did a famous ad shooting a rifle and he comes out and says, i've changed my mind. >> so does joe scarborough on msnbc. >> that's how the debate changes. >> he is a former republican congressman from florid

listen to what bob costas told cnn's piers morgan last night. >> it seems some people want it to be about everything and anything but guns. i don't think it's only about guns, but i think that guns, even if legally obtained, people's attitudes towards guns are definitely a part of this problem. could javon belcher, could he have stabbed her, yeah. i knew o.j. simpson, could he have strangled her or thrown her out the window? yeah. but the presence of a gun makes it much more likely that something like this will occur, much more likely. >> several players have been arrested over the years for gun violence. you'll remember plaxico burress who was sents to prison for shooting himself in the leg at a manhattan nightclub in 2008. there aren't too many people who know more about the nfl than adam scheffler. espn reporter. adam, thanks for joining us. i know you had a late night last night with nfl football. thanks for getting up for us. first of all, can the nfl really do anything to address the gun issue? these players is own guns legally, but they can be potentially dangerous. >> ted, the nfl
